Pregnancy Massage Course Overview
 

1. Introduction to Prenatal Massage
 

This foundational module provides a deep dive into the essentials of pregnancy massage, emphasising the anatomical and physiological changes women experience during pregnancy. Understanding these changes is critical, as they guide therapists in tailoring their techniques to accommodate each trimester’s specific needs.

 

Learning Objectives:

  • Grasp the unique requirements for prenatal massage.

  • Learn safe and effective positioning, draping, and techniques to alleviate common pregnancy discomforts like back pain, edema, and sciatica. ​

2. Anatomy and Physiology of Pregnancy

In this module, students delve into the intricate anatomy and physiological adjustments during pregnancy. By understanding these changes, therapists will be better prepared to handle potential contraindications and provide effective treatments for pregnant clients.

  • Circulatory and respiratory adaptations.

  • Common prenatal ailments and considerations for massage therapy. ​

3. Advanced Anatomy and Prenatal Massage Techniques for Each Trimester 

This module focuses on advanced techniques tailored to the specific physical structures of the pregnant body, including belly work, ligament support, and addressing musculoskeletal changes. Therapists will develop a deeper understanding of how to alleviate common discomforts by working with the body’s natural adaptations during pregnancy.

• Belly Work: Safe and effective abdominal massage techniques to provide comfort, improve circulation, and support optimal fetal positioning. Guidance on seeking consent and adapting methods based on the client’s comfort level.

• Pelvic and Uterine Ligament Techniques: Understanding the role of the sacrotuberous, sacrospinous, and round ligaments in pregnancy and how to release tension to enhance mobility and stability.

• Pelvic Floor Care: Techniques to support the pelvic floor, which helps with posture, stability, and preparation for childbirth.

• Musculoskeletal Adjustments: Addressing common pregnancy-related imbalances, including:

• Sacroiliac Joint Pain

• Symphysis Pubis Dysfunction

• Coccyx Discomfort

• Core and Hip Rotators: Methods to support the transverse abdominis, iliopsoas, and hip rotators to alleviate tension and improve balance.

Learning Objectives:

• Master hands-on techniques for belly and ligament work to improve mobility, stability, and overall comfort.

• Understand how to assess and address pelvic alignment issues that can contribute to discomfort or labor challenges.

• Develop a personalised approach to care, adapting techniques to the client’s specific needs and trimester.

• Learn how to integrate these techniques into a full prenatal massage session for holistic support.

• Practice ligament release techniques using hands-on and stone-based methods.

• Hands-on exploration of pelvic floor and core muscle support techniques, with attention to maintaining balance and mobility.

4. Learning Induction Massage Techniques
 

This module introduces techniques to encourage labor when the body is ready, focusing on safe and respectful practices. Induction massage is carefully approached, with the goal of aiding natural labor progression without compromising the mother’s or baby’s well-being.

 

Key Techniques Covered:

  • Acupressure points associated with labor stimulation.

  • Techniques for relaxation to reduce stress and anxiety around labor.

Learning Objectives:

  • Understand indications and contraindications of induction massage.

  • Practice techniques that support labor onset, especially when past the due date.

5. Postpartum Care: Closing the Bones
 

Originating from traditional postpartum care practices, “Closing the Bones” is a gentle but powerful technique to honor and support a new mother’s body. It involves abdominal wrapping and rhythmic movements that help guide the pelvis back to its pre-pregnancy position, offering emotional and physical closure after childbirth. 

Key Components:

  • Wrapping techniques that promote recovery and healing.

  • Emotional aspects of closing the bones and honoring the postpartum journey.

Learning Objectives:

  • Practice safe and effective “Closing the Bones” techniques.

  • Develop a holistic approach to postpartum care, understanding its importance for new mothers’ recovery.

6. Clinic Session:
Practical Experience with Pregnant Clients
 

This clinic module is a critical aspect of the course, providing hands-on experience. Trainees will work directly with pregnant clients, applying the techniques learned in the course, under supervision, to gain real-world experience.

  • Practice techniques learned in a controlled environment with real clients.

  • Develop confidence in handling various pregnancy stages and addressing specific needs.

  • Receive feedback to refine and improve techniques before working independently.
